Git and Github Workshop (Organized on 6th November 2021)

A virtual hands-on workshop on Git and Github was organized by the members of Open Source Open Community for the students of MCA, batch 2024.

All the participants were ready with their Github accounts and Git Bash in their systems at 10 am, 6th November 2021 for the exclusive workshop.

The workshop intended to familiarize the participants with the fundamentals and working of Git. All the participants were thrilled to know how the industry giants manage their gigantic codebases through the Version Control systems such as Git.  The workshop commenced with executing the basic commands on Git Bash. It then instructed the participants on how they could create and access their Github repositories while enjoying the vast functionalities of the Bash shell.

The highlights of the workshop were:

  • Need for using Git and Github
  • How to access the software from the command shell
  • How to upload and manage the project repositories on Github
  • What are branches, fork, and pull requests
  • How to merge the branches and avoid conflicts
  • How developers collaborate and work on huge projects using Git

The workshop saw the enthusiastic participation of over 100 participants. They interacted well and discussed their doubts and curiosities about the topic. Upon insistence, a short Git task was assigned to the participants for further exploration.

This one-day virtual hands-on Git workshop organized by the Open Source Open Community succeeded in imparting valuable knowledge to all the participants. We look forward to organizing more such workshops in the future for the benefit of the participants and contributing to the Open Source Community.

Feedback from the students:

At the end of the workshop, the students were asked to share their feedback about the workshop through a GitHub-related task. The students had to fork a repository, follow the steps taught in the workshop, create a text file with their feedback in it, add the file and push the changes, and finally create a pull request to the main repository where the admin can view all the feedback.

Here are some of the snapshots from the workshop:
