An Introduction to Git and GitHub : For beginners(Organized on 9th January 2021)

A one day online workshop was conducted by the members of the open source open community.

On 9th January 2021 at 11:00 am, students gathered on an online platform.

The main objective of the workshop was to make the students understand :

  • The importance of git.
  • How to access git software via command line.
  • How git gives a self –contained record of an ongoing programming version.
  • How to use git to manage and keep track of files to have a record of what has been done.
  •  Students were also introduced to git’s branching model and how it can be used to create independent local branches in the code.
  • Merging of branches.

GitBash, Linux and GitHub :

Interested students were requested to install gitbash software and have some basic knowledge about the linux commands as the prerequisite.

They were given proper resources from where they could learn about installation of gitbash and learn about linux commands prior to the workshop.

Enthusiastic Participation of the students :

After learning the basics students were assigned task related to the info they have gained through the workshop. The students showed keen interest in the online workshop and participated with great enthusiasm to learn something new apart from their academics and gained experience of using git efficiently.

Overall more than 100 students participated in this online workshop. Although this workshop was conducted online but it was much more interactive and resourceful making it more successful.

We will try to conduct more workshops in near future to share and learn the knowledge of open source and to contribute to the open source community.
